As we said goodbye to 2016 last week and enter this new year , I would like to look back at few of my favourite movies from 2016. We had some great hits and also some pretty terrible misses, nevertheless here are the films I suggest you watch before you hop on to the very awaited list of movies that are to release in 2017. Note that the following movies are in no particular order.
1. Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum, Tamil.
Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum is a Tamil romantic comedy-drama starring Vijay Sethupathi and Madonna Sebastian, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy. The plot revolves around two jobless adults who live in the same colony and become each other’s support despite their contrasting personalities. A refreshing and definitely feel good movie.
2. Dangal , Hindi.
Dangal is a Hindi biographical sports film starring Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Sheikh and Geeta Phoghat, directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The film is based on the real life story of a former wrestler who never got the chance to accomplish his dreams of wining a gold medal for India and achieves it through his daughters. A movie that proves women can achieve anything and fights gender based stereotypes.

3. Oopiri/Thozha , Telugu/Tamil.
Thozha is a bilingual Telugu-Tamil comedy drama movie starring Akkineni Nagarjuna , Karthi Sivakumar and Tamannaah Bhatia , directed by Vamsi Paidipally. It is a remake of the famous 2011 Les Intouchables and has been adapted a bit to fit the Indian scenario. The movie will definitely leave a smile on your face as Nagarjuna and Karthi form the ultimate duo. A remake you won’t regret watching!
4. Appa , Tamil.
Appa is a Tamil drama film starring Samuthirakani , Thambi Ramaiah and Namo Narayana and directed by Samuthirakani himself. The film depicts three fathers who each have a different perception and way of parenting. The movie also has a strong social message criticizing the educational system in India. A must watch for any parent !

6. 24 , Tamil.
24 is a Tamil sci-fi movie starring Suriya , Samantha Ruth Prabhu , Nithya Menen, Ajay Saranya Ponvannan , directed by Vikram Kumar. Despite few hitches and a lengthy plot, 24 was a pretty great attempt to introduce such full fledge sic-fi movie to the Indian audience while still having an appeal. You can summarize the movie in three principal themes : time travelling , sibling rivalry and revenge.
7. Irudhi Suttru/ Saala Kadhoos , Tamil/Hindi.

Irudhi Suttru/Saala Kadhoos is a Tamil/Hindi sports film starring R.Madhavan and Ritika Singh , directed by Sudha Kongara. Another sports film for 2016 where a failed boxer discovers potential in a young roadside fish seller , Madhi. He takes her under his wing and trains her daily , however both of their strong personalities comes head-to-head and causes high tensions between the two. The rest of the movie is about the evolution of the relationship between the coach and the trainee. A strong comeback for Maddy and new-comer Ritika Singh!
8. Kodi , Tamil.
Kodi is a Tamil political-thriller starring Dhanush , Trisha Krishnan , Anupama Paramasweran and Saranya Ponvannan , directed by R.S Durai Senthilkumar. The movie might not be the most exceptional movie of the year , however, Trisha’s portrayal of Rudra definitely deserves few accolades as she succeeds her attempt at a negative role. She succeeded to play the role of an aspiring politician who faces an internal conflict when it comes between her career and her lover , another aspiring politician. Santosh Narayanan’s soundtrack is also another plus for this movie! Overall, Trisha definitely steals the scene from Dhanush in this one!

Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada / Sahasam Swasaga Sagipo is Tamil/Telugu action-romance film starring Silambarasan alias Simbu in Tamil , Naga Chaitanya in Telugu and Manjima Mohan in both languages , directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. It is a typical Gautham Menon movie with the amazing background score by AR.Rahman and the main character narrating the story. Although I am not a fan of Simbu , it was nice to see him back on-screen under the direction of Gautham Menon in Tamil. The movie gives us a slight VTV vibe , but don’t expect it to be as amazing as VTV. Although the movie seemed very rushed and confusing at times in the second part , the first part is definitely worth watching.
10. Theri, Tamil.

Theri is a Tamil action film starring Vijay, Baby Nainika, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, J.Mahendran, Prabhu, Raadika Sarathkumar, directed by Atlee. With a cast of well-known faces, Theri is a mix of joy, tears and laughter as we get to know the darker past of a mono parental baker, Joseph Kuruvilla and his daughter, Niveditha alias Nivi. Theri is definitely an entertainer as it got us saying Theri baby!
To sum it up, although 2016 had unfortunately alot of catastrophical movies ( Pokkiri Raja , Thodari and many more ) , 2016 was also somewhat an experimental year ( in Kollywood atleast), which I highly applaud as certain storylines became overly redundant. Hopefully , this was a year of reflexion for the film fraternity and I expect more greater films and more variety for 2017. With eagerly awaited upcoming films like Kavan, Bahubaali : The Conlusion, Ennai Nokki Payum Thotta, VIP 2, Imaikkaa Nodigal and many other films with a very ineteresting casting , I hope we will experience a little less disappointment this year.
Overall , 2016 was a mix of disappointments and surprises thus why I would rate this year as a 5.5/10 for the film industry and I must admit , I am being very generous.
Let me know what were your favourites movies of 2016 and most awaited films for 2017 and leave suggestions as to what upcoming movies I shall take a look at and review this year, no matter what industry !
